“Empowering academic researchers to succeed in the new paradigm while protecting research excellence and freedom on inquiry”

Academic research has undergone a seismic shift since the end of the 20th Century. This shift has proceeded across six axes:

(1) The research model shift from the dominance of a single discipline form of inquiry to the emergence of translational, multi-disciplinary, and multi-sectoral collaborations.

(2) The research outcome shift away from incremental generation of new knowledge to translational research models generating new, transformative knowledge.

(3) The impact shift from research activities that solely impact academia to those that also impact society, human health, the environment and the economy.

(4) The grant review process shift that integrates multi-disciplinary review committees into the peer review process.

(5) The grant review criteria shift away from the predominant focus upon researcher track record to one focusing equally on track record, proposed research program excellence and the potential to realize impacts beyond academia.

(6) The grant application shift whereby funding applications have become complex, hybrid documents integrating grant applications, research plans and business plans.

The Butlers provide independent research and development services to researchers, universities, research hospitals, colleges, institutes of technology and polytechnics.
